As part of the e-Science programme the GRID computing infrastructure at Southampton is being developed to support ongoing and forthcoming e-Science projects.  To date this has focused on the Globus Tool kit but will move forward to develop GRID solutions on the emerging commercial distributed computing platforms that are coming available.  This activity is being progressed by a joint team from the e-Science Centre, Southampton University Information Systems Service (ISS) and active practitioners of GRID technology such as the IT-Innovation Centre

The aims of this activity are:

To establish an operating infrastructure and associated support processes for GRID computing technology at Southampton and to join in the national and international activities of the GRID community

and the objectives:

  • Install and commission the Globus 2 software and take part in the UK Globus GRID trials
  • Install and commission the Condor software ready for live use in the GRID environment
  • Prepare HPC resources and make available through the GRID for Southampton users and their collaborators
  • Develop and activate robust support & management processes for users of the GRID service at Southampton
